Environmental Sources
In addition to taking in contaminated food and water sources, the bacteria causing cholera could also present in coastal waters, especially in tropical areas and around the equator. In some rare cases, shellfish could also take in these bacteria from the surrounding environment. You might eliminate these germs when cooking, but if you consume raw contaminated shellfish or if it isn’t cooked properly, it is likely to cause cholera. However, most of the cases are often triggered by poor sanitation. [6]
