C. Difficile Infection – Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatment

After diagnosis, your doctor would tell you if you need hospital treatment. Most times, if the infection is mild, you could recover at home without going to the hospital. Many cases of C. Difficile infection respond favorably to treatment, with recovery within the first two weeks.

The first step to treating the infection should be to quit taking the antibiotics which triggered the infection. In some mild cases, this could the only treatment needed. [3]

The next step in treating the infection is to administer the right antibiotics for the treatment of C. Difficile (usually Vancomycin, fidaxomicin). This seems counterintuitive as the cause of the infection itself is antibiotics usage. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends you use the antibiotics for at least 10 days for effective treatment of C. Difficile infection. [4]

If parts of the bowel were found to be damaged due to the infection, surgery is often done to repair the damage. As you recover, you’re expected to take enough fluids to replace the lost water due to diarrhea.
