5-Alpha Reductase Enzyme Inhibitors
5-alpha reductase enzyme inhibitors are an effective treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia. They work by reducing the size of the prostate gland, especially in those people with a significantly enlarged prostate. On average, it takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months for the medications to take full effect. This treatment also helps avoid the need for a surgical procedure. Currently, the FDA approves the use of two 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, including Dutasteride and finasteride. Possible side effects include lowered semen production, impotence, and low libido. [4]
