Aphasia: Causes, Symptoms & Treatments

Multiple Sclerosis

People with multiple sclerosis might also experience aphasia as a symptom. While this is quite rare, it often occurs in tumefactive multiple sclerosis, a variant of the disease. It would affect and damage the gray matter of the brain, which is responsible for language. The disorder is quite similar to a brain tumor with one or many large demyelinating lesions. Along with sudden aphasia, some other possible symptoms include visual field deficits, motor impairment, impaired consciousness, and seizures. Many studies have shown that these language impairments in aphasia are directly related to cognitive dysfunctions in multiple sclerosis. [4]
