Acid Reflux: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatments

Diet

Another therapy to decrease the occurrence of GERD is diet, which plays an important role in controlling acid reflux. Certain foods such as processed snacks, chili peppers, fatty meat, citrus fruits, garlic, and chocolate could cause the esophageal sphincter to relax and aggravate acid reflux. Therefore, limit the intake of these foods could help prevent GERD. Some recommended foods to consume include root vegetables, lean meat, whole grains, ginger, and nonfat milk.

Surgery

Surgery is a treating option when you have severe gastroesophageal reflux disease or when you want to get off the side effects of acid suppression medication. Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) and LINX reflux management system are the three most common forms of anti-reflux surgery. Take Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication for instance, surgeons cut five small incisions in your abdomen and then wrap the bottom of the esophagus with the top of the stomach. The procedure reinforces the esophageal sphincter and prevents acid reflux.
