Scleroderma can lead to complications, ranging from mild to serious. They often happen when the condition is not treated or when treatment options do not resolve the symptom.
– Dry mouth and eyes: Some forms could lead to Sjogren’s syndrome, which is characterized by very dry mouth and eyes.
– Heart issues: Arrhythmias or unusual heart rhythms could occur due to narrowed blood vessels and scarring of heart tissue.
– Lung damage
– Kidney damage: Caused by reduced blood flow to your kidneys. Kidney failure could happen if left untreated.
– Dental issues: When facial skin is tightened, opening the mouth can be hard. This makes it more difficult to brush the teeth, causing many dental issues.
– Heart failure: Congestive heart failure or unusual heart rhythms can happen.
– Sexual dysfunction: Women might have a restricted vaginal opening or reduced lubrication, while men might have erectile dysfunction. [10]
