10 Facts about Hemochromatosis

Causes of Hemochromatosis

Hemochromatosis can be divided into primary and secondary. The former type is often inherited and triggered by mutations of the HFE gene. There are 2 common mutations: H63D and C282Y. People with this condition might inherit copies of the defective genes from their parents and suffer from it. The disease often develops from 40 to 60 years of age. Secondary hemochromatosis is often caused by some other medical issues, such as kidney dialysis, regular blood transfusions, alcoholism, hepatitis C infection, chronic liver disease, or anemia. [3]
