Medications
The consumption of any drugs or medications, both OTC and prescription, can trigger the symptoms of lupus. This is especially true when you take them in the long run. The condition is also known as drug-induced lupus erythematosus. Some products with sulfa would make you more sensitive to sunlight and increase the risk. These include sulfasalazine, tolbutamide, sulfisoxazole, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Many antibiotic medications, such as cloxacillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin, and penicillin would affect your immune system and lead to flare-ups of lupus. Some other drugs that should be considered carefully include anti-seizure medications, blood pressure medications, and tetracycline drugs. It is better to talk with your doctor before deciding to take any of these drugs. [5]
