Cissexism versus Transphobia and Effects of Cissexism on Mental Health
Transphobia and cissexism are related to each other. However, they are not exactly the same. In general, transphobia refers to the active discrimination triggered by bias or hatred. On the other hand, cissexism can be subtler as it exists in the daily life based on the traditional system of gender and sex that eliminate nonbinary and transgender individuals. Cissexists believe that only two genders exist. You must be either a woman or a man, no other genders are acceptable. [3]
The victims of cissexism may experience certain mental problems, such as anxiety, depression, general psychological distress, and posttraumatic stress symptoms. They can be caused by a group of several factors. These include:
– Violence and discrimination
– The internalization of a minority group about negative stereotypes
– The effort to protect themselves against violence and discrimination
Many people may feel overwhelmed to cope with these problems and experience certain mental issues. [4]
