What Is a Contusion?

Types of Contusion

Muscle Contusion

The muscles consist of many blood vessels that provide them with oxygen and blood. A contusion to a muscle tends to be deep under the skin and would cause severe pain. In most cases, people with this type would think they have a broken bone, strain, or sprain. Muscle contusions typically heal on their own without the need for treatment. Nevertheless, a large amount of blood would accumulate in your muscle and lead to swelling. You need to visit a doctor to drain it and speed up recovery. [4]

Subcutaneous Contusion

This is the most common type of subcutaneous contusions. It occurs directly under the skin’s surface. Nearly everyone experiences this problem at some point in their life. Most cases are caused by an injury or cut. Some parts of the body, such as the knees or hands, are especially prone. In very rare cases, massive bleeding may occur due to a large bruise, from an artery or a vein, which can be hard to stop. They tend to be very painful and large, which would be life-threatening if left untreated. [5]
