What Causes Drug-Induced Parkinsonism?

Which Medications May Cause Drug-Induced Parkinsonism?

Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium channel blockers, also known as calcium antagonists, are prescribed to reduce blood pressure. Some doctors may also use it for treating neurological issues or chest pain. They work by inhibiting calcium from penetrating the cells in the arteries and heart. Otherwise, calcium would cause these parts to squeeze more strongly. In other words, calcium channel blockers may help blood vessels stay open and relaxed. Common options include amlodipine, felodipine, diltiazem, isradipine, nifedipine, nicardipine, verapamil, and nisoldipine. In certain circumstances, these medications would lead to Parkinsonism and other movement disorders. [3]
