Types of Twins

Fraternal Twins

Fraternal twins, also known as dizygotic twins, come from separate eggs and sperms, which are released by the body of the birthing parents at the same time. They share the same number of chromosomes or genetic material, but may be not born at the same time. That’s why fraternal twins do not look identical, and may have different sexes. This is the most common type of twins, which tends to run in the families. In addition, women with a sister or mother with fraternal twins are around two times as likely to have fraternal twins later. [3]
