The Facts about Duodenum

Duodenum and Digestion Function

The duodenum starts the process of breaking down food and absorbing nutrients in the small intestine. Firstly, it receives chyme or undigested food from your stomach, which will be mixed with bile, enzymes, and digestive juices. This process is known as chemical digestion. It prepares the contents in your stomach to make it easier to absorb minerals, vitamins, and nutrients. This absorption starts in the duodenum and continues in other organs in the small intestine. Most nutrients are mainly absorbed in the jejunum, the second part of the small intestine, but the duodenum also absorbs some. [5]
