Side Effects of Hand Sanitizers and Other Disinfectants

Increased Risk of Eczema

In people with eczema or hand dermatitis, symptoms may occur or worsen after each use of hand sanitizers, whether they are gel, liquid, or foam-based products. These may include discolored skin spots, cracks, dryness, redness, or itchiness. This is mainly because hand sanitizers may contain certain chemicals that may irritate the skin and trigger the symptoms. To reduce the risk, do not overuse hand sanitizers as it would dry the skin excessively. Also, you can prevent this problem by moisturizing your hand after each use, ideally with products that contain petrolatum or mineral oil. First, you need to rub both hands together for 30 seconds and then cover them with a hand sanitizer. Wait until your hands are dry before applying a moisturizer. [3]
