Male Birth Control Options

Conventional Vasectomy

Vasectomy is a permanent birth control. In this surgery, the doctor will divide the vas deferens that carry sperm. This prevents sperm from reaching seminal fluid and penetrating the female’s vagina during sexual intercourse. A conventional vasectomy is an outpatient procedure that does not use anesthesia. You will stay awake during the whole procedure. It typically takes around 1 week to recover from a vasectomy. Physical and sexual activities should be avoided during this period. Like condoms, a conventional vasectomy is also very effective at preventing pregnancy. It will not change the production of testosterone and do not reduce the overall sex drive. However, a vasectomy will not protect you against sexually transmitted infections.  [2]
