Diuretics for Hypertension: Facts to Know

Differences in Diuretics

All types of diuretics work by increasing the amount of sodium loss through urination. However, they target different parts of the kidneys. In general, the kidneys serve as filters to get rid of excess fluids and toxins. Diuretics may signal these organs to remove more sodium, which is bounded to water for removal during urination. This process helps reduce blood volume and decrease blood pressure.

Another effect of loop and thiazide diuretics is the loss of potassium, an important mineral for muscle and heart function. To avoid low levels of potassium, you should take supplements or consume more potassium-rich foods, such as white beans, dark chocolate, dried apricots, bananas, cod, dates, baked potato, salmon, avocado, or Brussel sprouts. While potassium-sparing diuretics do not affect your levels of potassium, they are not as effective in treating high blood pressure as the other two forms. Therefore, your doctor may prescribe them with other medications. [5]
