Causes of Delusions and Hallucinations
In many cases, hallucinations and delusions are signs of psychosis that typically happen from the same causes. Some common causes may include:
– Delirium, also known as acute organic brain syndrome or acute confusional state
– Fever
– Stroke
– Epilepsy
– Some prescription drugs, such as steroids and stimulants
– Brain cysts and tumors
– Severe diseases, such as liver failure or kidney failure
– HIV and infections that may impact the brain
– Brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
– Mental health disorders, such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia
– The use of some drugs and alcohol, which may lead to psychosis during withdrawal or under the influence [8]
