8 Commonly Abused Prescription Drugs

Alprazolam and Clonazepam

Another type of benzodiazepines that is often abused by many people is alprazolam. The medication is typically prescribed for treating panic disorder and anxiety disorder. It works by reducing abnormal activities in the brain that boost excitement. You can get alprazolam in the form of a concentrated solution, extended-release tablet, or tablet. Similar to other benzodiazepines mentioned above, alprazolam may affect how the brain produces certain neurotransmitters. If taken too much or too frequently, the medication may change brain chemistry and increase the risk of addiction or dependence in the long term. Therefore, it is very important to follow the directions of your doctor and take the medication as directed. [4]

Clonazepam is a type of benzodiazepines. It is typically prescribed for controlling seizures in people with epilepsy, panic disorder, restless legs syndrome, or involuntary muscle spasms. The medication is only available on prescription in the form of a liquid or tablets. It works by boosting levels of a calming neurotransmitter in the brain, which subsequently relaxes tense muscles and alleviates anxiety. If you take it for more than 4 weeks, it may lead to addiction. Drowsiness and trouble sleeping are the most common symptoms of this problem. [5]
