Seizures in Adults with No History – What to Know

Two Main Types of Seizures in Adults

Generalized Seizures

Generalized seizures affect both parts of the brain. This form typically leads to a loss of consciousness. Common subtypes include:

– Clonic seizures: Muscles may jerk constantly

– Tonic seizures: Muscles may become stiffer, typically in the legs, arms, and back

– Generalized tonic-clonic seizures: This form has both the clonic phase and tonic phase

– Atonic seizures: It may lead to an unexpected loss of muscle tone

– Myoclonic seizures: Jerking may happen in one part of the limbs or upper body

– Absence seizures: It causes slight twitching or blank staring.

– Dacrystic and gelastic seizures: A dacrystic seizure may lead to uncontrollable crying, while a gelastic seizure would result in uncontrollable laughing. Both types are typically linked to a brain lesion. [2]
