Even when you do not have any sores or lesions, the herpes simplex virus can still stay in your body and wait for an outbreak. In these cases, an antibody test would look for the specific types of proteins that would respond with both forms of HSV. This means that only dormant infections instead of active ones would bring positive results. However, keep in mind that this diagnostic test cannot examine if you ever had or have been exposed to the virus.
