Fingernails Turning Blue: Causes, Treatment, and More

Three Forms of Cyanosis

In general, cyanosis can be divided into three main forms:

– Peripheral cyanosis: Also known as acrocyanosis, this form typically causes purple or blue discoloration in the toes, fingers, and nails.

– Central cyanosis: This form usually leads to blue discoloration on the lips, tongue, and other parts of the mouth and parts of your eye.

– Differential cyanosis: This form causes blue discoloration in other parts of the body, such as the left or right side, or the lower or upper areas. [2]

Associated Symptoms of Blue Fingernails

Depending on the underlying cause, you may notice the presence of blue fingernails with other symptoms. These may include confusion, fast breathing, clammy skin, leg pain, sensitivity to cold, anxiety, reduced urination, as well as tingling or numbness. Make sure to visit a healthcare provider as soon as possible. In many cases, these signs may indicate an underlying condition that requires medical treatments. [3]
