Common Causes of Plaque Psoriasis

Infections & Skin Injury

Infections, both chronic and acute, may lead to plaque psoriasis. This is particularly noticed in people with HIV, which is linked to persistent inflammation. The decisive factor for the development of plaque psoriasis in infections could be the suppression of the immune system. Common causes include the flu, strep throat, or bronchitis. Treating the infection could help relieve symptoms. [2]

Skin trauma or injury may lead to the development of plaque psoriasis as well. This response is also known as the Koebner phenomenon. It often occurs in people with other skin issues, such as molluscum contagiosum, lichen planus, and warts. Around 25 percent of psoriasis cases experience this problem. Typical triggers include needle pricks, skin allergies, insect bites, or sunburns. Even older injuries on the skin, such as a tattoo or surgical wound, may suddenly become the main area of a psoriasis flare. [3]
