Causes of Swollen Ankles

Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a form of swelling which would affect soft tissues in your ankles and legs. It is caused by the accumulation of lymph, which is mostly comprised of white blood cells. Lymphedema often happens when something blocks or damages your lymphatic system, a group of organs and tissues that helps eliminate infections and keep balanced fluids. This condition would result from cancer, infections, or removal of your lymph nodes. Also, some hereditary issues would trigger lymphedema. Most damages caused by the issue are mostly irreversible, so the main goal of treatment is to alleviate the swelling. [5]
