Can Asthma Cause COPD – Differences & Similarities

Differences in Causes

The underlying causes of COPD and asthma are not the same. Asthma attacks are often triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. People with a family history tend to be at a higher risk. Also, exposure to some allergens would trigger this condition. These include cold air, pet hair, mold, dust mites, pollen, medications, smoke, and bacteria. On the other hand, smoking is the most common cause of COPD. Also, burning fuel from heating or cooking is a major risk factor for this condition in many developed countries. These substances would irritate and inflame the lungs, thus affecting the elasticity of the air sacs. [4]
