Common Types of Dementia
Below are the most common forms of dementia:
– Alzheimer’s disease: This is the most common type that accounts for 3 to 4 out of 5 dementia cases.
– Lewy body dementia: In this form, protein accumulates in nerve cells and blocks the transmit of chemical signals from the brain. It leads to memory loss, slower reactions, and lost messages.
– Vascular dementia: The main cause of this type is lowered blood flow to the brain. This leads to the accumulation of plaque in arteries or a stroke.
– Frontotemporal dementia: This form includes several subtypes, which are characterized by changes in the side and front areas of the brain.
– Parkinson’s disease: Common symptoms include depression, paranoia, irritability, and issues with judgment or reasoning. [2]
