How to Interpret Results of a C-Reactive Protein Test
The results of a C-reactive protein test are often reported in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or liter (mg/L). They can be interpreted as follow:
– Less than 0.3 mg/dL: Normal results in healthy people.
– Between 0.3 and 1.0 mg/dL: It indicates normal to moderate inflammation, common in those who are pregnant, obese, have diabetes, common cold, or smoke.
– Between 1.0 and 10 mg/dL: Inflammation in the entire body due to cancer, heart attack, pancreatitis, bronchitis, or autoimmune disease.
– More than 10 mg/dL: Caused by major trauma, systemic vasculitis, acute viral infections, or acute bacterial infections.
– More than 50 mg/dL: Serious inflammation in the entire body, typically due to serious bacterial infections. [6]
