How to Diagnose Hypertonic Dehydration
Your doctor may need to ask certain questions about your medications and medical history. In addition, you should provide information about your physical activities and circumstances when you feel dehydrated. A physical exam will be then implemented. Some further tests should be done before a diagnosis of hypertonic dehydration is made. These include:
– Blood tests to measure levels of potassium, calcium, sodium, glucose, and blood urea nitrogen. Blood samples can also help check for blood osmolality, which indicates electrolyte concentration to determine whether there is a loss of body fluids.
– Urine tests to measure the urine’s osmolality
– Ultrasound to measure fluid volume in blood vessels [8]
