Brachytherapy – Internal Radiation Therapy (IRT) for Cancer

How Will You Feel during Brachytherapy and What to Expect after Brachytherapy?

There may be a lot of pain when implants are placed into the body. Also, the radiation and medications used for cancer treatments may also make you feel sick, weak, and drowsy. However, these side effects will not last so long. You would also experience some discomfort if an applicator is used to keep the implants in place. Talk with your healthcare provider for any medications that can help you alleviate pain or relax. Also, inform them immediately if these problems persist or become worse over time. [9]

Once brachytherapy has been completed, your healthcare provider will remove the catheter. Below is what you should expect:

– You may experience tenderness in the area where the applicator or catheter was inserted. This problem may last for several weeks or even months

– You will take painkillers before the removal of the applicator or catheter

– Once the applicator or catheter is removed, there will be no more radiation in the body. Therefore, other people can now be close to you, even pregnant women and children.

– You should limit some physical activities for 1 or 2 weeks [10]
