Brachytherapy – Internal Radiation Therapy (IRT) for Cancer

How to Prepare for Brachytherapy and How Are Implants Put in the Body?

To prepare for brachytherapy, you may have to:

– Stop taking some medications that affect blood clotting, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or blood thinners

– Get an imaging scan, such as a CT scan or an MRI scan

– Avoid eating or drinking anything for a couple of hours before the procedure

– Use an enema to cleanse the bowel

Your doctor will show you exactly what to do before this procedure. [6]

The implant process is typically performed in an operating room, which is specially designed to prevent the radiation from escaping outside. You will get either local or general anesthesia to reduce pain. Next, the doctor will use a catheter to put one or more implants into the body tissue or cavity. During this procedure, an imaging test, such as a CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, or X-ray, can help locate the precise area for inserting the implants. [7]
