Steroids
A prescription steroid ointment or cream is typically the first-line treatment for lichen planus. It can be applied directly to the affected area to alleviate pain and fight infection. If the symptoms persist and worsen or spread to other parts, your healthcare provider would prescribe a steroid injection or pill. Oral steroids are suitable for lichen planus that leads to mouth sores. Skin thinning and irritation are common side effects of topical steroids, especially when used in the long term. Therefore, it is better to stop this treatment after 2 to 4 weeks or as soon as symptoms of lichen planus improve. [2]
