In most cases, fever blisters can resolve themselves without treatment after 10 to 14 days. Some antiviral drugs and ointments would help reduce the duration and relieve pain or discomfort. Several common antiviral medications include penciclovir, famciclovir, valacyclovir, and acyclovir. They are often available in pills and should be prescribed by a doctor. You can purchase some creams in drug stores and apply them directly to the blisters several times during the day. In general, medications are more effective than ointments. In more severe cases, antiviral drugs would be injected. Some home remedies can also help, such as apple cider vinegar, essential oils, L-lysine supplements, and ice lemon balm. [7]
