How Your Tongue Tells About Your Health

Yellow Tongue

Many people might get shocked when seeing themselves having yellow tongues. No worries! The condition is usually temporary and can clear up with good oral hygiene. Factors such as oral hygiene products with oxidizing agents, bad oral hygiene, dry mouth, foods with colorants, medication side effects, etc., can contribute to the yellow discoloration on tongues. Although a yellow tongue can happen to anyone, smokers have a higher chance of experiencing a yellowish coating on the tongue, according to the study.

On rare occasions, a yellow tongue is probably a sign of jaundice. Jaundice happens when people have too much bilirubin (yellow chemical) in their blood. Ordinarily, jaundice only makes specific parts like skin or whites of the eyes turn yellow. However, in some cases, jaundice can make tongues yellowed. A yellow tongue caused by jaundice is life-threatening, and immediate medical measures should be taken to prevent liver failure. [5]
