Central Line
A central line injects medications into the body through a more central vein in the torso. It is divided into 4 main types:
– Port: This is a small reservoir with a silicone cover. It can be implanted under the chest or arm’s skin for injecting medications.
– Tunneled line: It involves the insertion of a needle and feeding it a considerable distance before the penetration into the central vein.
– Peripherally inserted central catheter: The doctor inserts a catheter from the peripheral vein and then feeds it to the heart.
– Percutaneous central venous catheter: The catheter is directly inserted through the skin to the external or internal jugular, femoral vein, or subclavian vein. [8]
