What You Should Know About a Hyperkalemia Diet Plan

Foods to Limit or Avoid and Dietary Restrictions

Following a hyperkalemia diet plan does not mean that you have to avoid all high-potassium products. Instead, it is advisable to limit their consumption to fewer than 2 grams a day. Potassium can be found in veggies, fruits, beverages, starchy foods, snacks, and dairy products. High-potassium fruits to restrict include oranges, avocados, cantaloupe, mangoes, kiwis, apricots, and bananas. High-potassium veggies to limit include tomatoes, potatoes, beetroots, spinach, mushrooms, and pumpkins. Other high-potassium products to avoid include lentils, chickpeas, orange juice, milk, or breakfast cereals. [3]

Some people would have different preferences and dietary needs in a hyperkalemia diet plan. For instance, they prefer a plant-based diet or want to avoid gluten. These restrictions would make it more challenging to take in sufficient nutrients on a low-sodium diet. The best option is to consult a dietitian to decide which foods and drinks to eat and how much to consume. Also, if you have some risk factors or obesity, high-fat and high-cholesterol foods should be avoided. [4]
