Stye or Chalazia?Facts to Know

1What Is a Stye and Chalazia?

A stye, also known as a hordeolum, usually forms on the outside of the lower or upper eyelid. It occurs when an oil-producing gland in the eyelid is infected. The main cause of this problem is the bacteria called staphylococcus, which would come in contact with the eyelid when you rub the eyes with your hands. Other eye products or contact lenses with bacteria may also lead to an infection. A style appears like a boil or large pimple and can be filled with pus. In most cases, a stye tends to affect only one eye. [1]

Chalazia are small swelling or lumps that occur on the eyelid. They are often caused by a Meibomian cyst due to a blocked oil gland or Meibomian. They may appear on either the lower or upper of the eyelid. In most cases, these lumps tend to be painless and harmless. Chalazia would disappear over time without the need for treatment. However, you should still visit your healthcare provider, particularly when they block the vision. [2]
